King of Wands - Full Quilt

King of Wands

36" x 24"

The King of Wands was the second quilt I created for an on line Tarot Card Challenge. About 40 artists came together to create the 78 Tarot cards which are exceptoinal for thier beatutiful imagry. The collection was shown at Houston and Chicago. An Artist Statement and Card Description was created for every card.

The Tarot is an ancient system of symbols that have fascinated people for centuries. They are the ancestors of playing cards, although they are used more for meditation now than for any game. They represent a full view of the human experience, which is timeless and yet ever changing.

The Major Arcana represent the basic external forces and situations of our lives. The Minor Arcana are more the places, people and situations of everyday life. Within the Minor Arcana there are four suites: Cups, Wands, Swords and Pentacles. These represent four different directions that people focus on in their lives.

I was interested in the King of Wands card because it focused on creativity, thinking outside the box and leading by example.

For the King of the suit of creativity, I wanted to make the wands even more significant, and more connected to the power he holds as King. Instead of the staff usually seen in the Wands suite, the King is flanked by small living trees, sturdy enough to be used as supports for his throne.

The King sits at his desk. Ideas and inspiration swirl in the air, as he views the issue from many angles. Nothing is set in concrete as the pieces shift before his eyes making new connections and parings. His stole contains the humble log cabin block to remind us that creativity has nothing to do with prestige, job titles or salaries, and everything to do with being open to inspiration from all sources and using it for all purposes.
