The summer of 2006 was perhaps not the best time to visit Egypt. Mary Ellen and I had a wonderful time. The scenery, culture and experiences were incredible and we felt safe for our entire trip. However for family back home it was not as comfortable. Because we would be leaving almost immediately for a Nile cruise, we informed friends and family we were unsure of when or if we could be in touch via email. How much connection can you get floating down the Nile?
We arrived in Egypt July 11, 2006 spending the day climbing the pyramids of Giza, riding camels on the edge of the Sahara Dessert, visiting the Sphinx and the Museum of Egyptology. That evening we boarded the night train for Aswan. By 9:00 am July 12, just as we were boarding the Nile cruise ship, the Presidential Nile Ritz, Hezbollah launched rocket attacks and kidnapped two Israeli soldiers patrolling the northern Israeli borders starting the Israel-Lebanon Crisis.
It took us 2 days to figure out how to turn on the television set so were blissfully unaware.
