I researched dramatic flowers and came across an image of a Pitcher Plant vine on the Internet. I decluttered the image by removing the rest of the jungle background and changed the plant design so it was gracefully arching.
The plant was constructed on its dark background fabric by using Reverse Machine Appliqué with cottons and tulles. Thread painting over the top allowed me to further control the color.
I often quilt my work in what might be considered a backwards order. The main focal point of the quilt is constructed, and in this case thread painted, and set aside. The yellow quilt sandwich was created, quilted and squared up but not necessarily as small as would eventually be used. Then the center panel and false borders or added to the top of the already quilted sandwhich. Judges from coast to coast have seen these quilts and no one has ever commented that “I'm cheating”.
