Judgment was one of 78 Tarot cards, created for a touring quilt exhibit. The card represents that point in our lives when we must stop and take stock of where we have been, what we have done, and how we want to move forward. In the traditional Tarot deck this is often depicted as Angel Gabriel blowing his horn on Judgment Day.

The Judgment card caught my attention because of the issues of spiritual growth. After burdens such as negative emotional baggage, excessive possessions and irrelevant concerns are released, we can move on to our true path.

I used reverse machine appliqué to complete the figure. The background arcs were quilted and then the figure was added and finished with additional quilting.

By focusing closely on one single person, I wanted the viewer to recognize how possible this transformation is for any of us. It does not require that we wait until we hear trumpets.

The woman sits in shallow water. She has let go of the unnecessary distractions, which have been cluttering her life. She basks in the morning sunlight, renewing her spirit in the warming rays. She glows with health and vitality almost as if the renewing force is coming both to her and from her at the same time. Her eyes are focused on fresh options as new choices are opening before her.
